You won’t find anyone more committed to community than Jeremy Paszczak—both at work and at play. His efforts range from coaching soccer to serving on numerous charitable boards to firefighting to providing those in the community with a path to independence at Sunshine Resources (the parent organization of Sunshine ReSale Store). While growing up in Chicago, he, his single mom, and five siblings received city assistance, and because of that support, he has committed his life to serving his “adopted” home of Door County.
As Director of Development at Sunshine Resources, he works in marketing, writes grants, oversees fundraising efforts and job training, and was the brainchild behind the wildly successful resale store, which provides job skills and coaching to the nonprofit’s clients, with 100% of the proceeds staying here in Door County. Residents and visitors can donate and shop for gently used items, and know that they are helping those with disabilities find their voice, freedom, and independence.
Q. Where do you go for Door County history?
A. The Door County Fire Co. restaurant was a firehouse from 1907 to 2006. Today it’s owned by a local firefighter. The walls showcase firefighting history — from patches on the wall to the original fire pole — and some of the menu’s items support a local firefighter charity.
Q. Do you have a favorite supper club?
A. The Nightingale Super Club’s prime rib is unbeatable.
Q. What’s your favorite local beach?
A. Otumba Park has a unique mat, which rolls out across the sand and allows people with disabilities to enjoy the water. The playground there is also fully ADA accessible.
Q. What’s your can’t-miss Door County event?
A. Sunshine Resources hosts the free annual Sunflower Fest with kids’ activities, food, wine, beer, and a cornhole tournament. My wife and I also like to go to Egg Harbor’s Pumpkin Patch Festival for the street vendors, who sell handmade food and art.
Q. Where do you go for a special occasion?
A. I love to be by the water, and the atmosphere at Kitty O’Reillys Irish Pub is the best. Grab a drink from the outdoor tiki bar, and it feels like you’re on a mini-vacation.
Q. Where do you go to experience nature?
A. I like to go mountain biking at Potawatomi State Park, but even just by walking around Sturgeon Bay you can get in touch with nature. The city has done a great job with greenery around the city — plus, you’re right by the water.
