Ask a Local: Dominic Frandrup Director of Door County Library

From running a marathon to running a library — Door County Library Director Dominic Frandrup’s interests run the gamut. Since moving here two years ago, he’s participated in gravel racing, fat-tire biking, triathlons, and more, and taken on the role of Door County Library’s director.
Frandrup stresses the importance of free access to information for all, and because Internet service can be spotty ‘round these parts, the library’s eight branches provide free Wi-Fi to residents and visitors, along with free classes and programs — from crafts and yoga to author talks and live music — and digital access, including audio books, movies, and TV shows. Growing up, libraries were an escape for Frandrup, who joined the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien, Stephen King, and C.S. Lewis in their fantasy worlds. Today his TBR (“to-be-read”) pile spans genres as he happily welcomes suggestions from library patrons on what to read next.
Q. What do you like to do in the winter?
A. There’s nothing like the quiet solitude of winter camping. There aren’t any bugs, and all you can hear is the hush of snow falling and settling on your tent.
Q. What’s your favorite place for a sweet treat?
A. Door County Confectionery makes huge, shareable, dark chocolate-peanut butter cups. I try not to indulge too often!
Q. Where do you like to go out with friends?
A. One Barrel Brewing Company is great for the whole family. There’s a firepit and yard games for the kids. On a quieter night, we’ll go to Hatch Distilling Co. for their Fellowship bourbon. Hatch also offers a spirits flight and awesome cocktails.
Q. Where do you go to enjoy nature?
A. I’ve biked or run every single county trail, but some far-flung places in Door County are still on my bucket list. I can’t wait to take a kayak tour of Cave Point County Park.
Q. Where do you go for art and culture?
A. I bought a photograph of Rock Island a long time ago at Frykman Studio Gallery. I could smell the water and the mist and the rain just looking at it! Now I need to go out there to explore it myself.
Q. What’s your favorite place for breakfast?
A. The Morning Glory food truck at Baileys Harbor. I get there early to watch the sunrise.
Q. What’s your favorite place for coffee?
A. The Gnoshery is a fun place to hang out, drink coffee, and play board games on a rainy day.
