The Wisconsin Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (WACVB) recently awarded the Door County Visitor Bureau (DCVB) with a 2016 Wisconsin Tourism Trailblazer award for their Capture Door County “Seasons Behind the Door” photo book.

Annually the WACVB gives out Wisconsin Tourism Trailblazer Awards to destination marketing organizations for outstanding marketing and partnership projects that help to advance Wisconsin’s tourism industry. 2016 awards were given out in 4 different categories, with the DCVB being honored in the outstanding partnerships category.

A partnership between the DCVB, Pediment Publishing and many great photographers were behind the creation of the beautiful “Seasons Behind the Door” photo book initiative. Users submitted more than 24,000 photos showcasing the scenic beauty of the seasons in Door County for the contest. More than 120,000 votes were cast resulting in the 232 winning photos that are featured in the book. The DCVB has sold more than 500 books since it was released in April.

“Our Capture Door County initiative has really helped us engage visitors through one of the best tools we have to promote Door County, that being photography,” stated Jon Jarosh, director of communications & PR for the DCVB. “The thousands of amazing photos and enthusiastic participants that helped create our Seasons Behind the Door fine-art photo book have at the same time helped us share how beautiful Door County is with the world,” he said.

Jarosh said this Tourism Trailblazer award is a testament to the DCVB’s ongoing commitment to incorporating new and innovative ways to promote Door County as a world-class tourism destination. “We need to have many tools in our destination marketing tool box, and our Capture Door County initiative continues to be a valuable tool for us on a variety of levels.”

The Seasons Behind The Door book was part of an ongoing monthly photo contest the DCVB continues to run on CaptureDoorCounty.com. A community of 4,200 users compete and vote for photos in themed monthly contests. At the end of the month two awards are given out for people’s and editors’ choice. The winners each receive a $25 DCVB gift certificate and a $20 Amazon gift certificate, all while giving the DCVB a continuous supply of fresh images to use to help promote Door County.

WACVB presents the Wisconsin Tourism Trailblazers awards each year during the Wisconsin Fall Tourism Conference to increase the visibility of Wisconsin’s tourism industry and destination marketing organizations. The awards recognize Wisconsin tourism organizations for outstanding marketing and partnership efforts. Wisconsin Department of Tourism Deputy Secretary Sarah Klavas joined WACVB in presenting the award during at this year’s conference in Eau Claire.

The Door County Visitor Bureau is the official tourism marketing organization for Door County, whose mission is to generate incremental economic impact for the community by attracting visitors with strategies that ensure sustainable tourism.
